- Be inventive. Think up original angles and content for your articles. Be bold, and then find the information to give weight to your story.
- Write in a fresh and clear style. Avoid cliché, and keep your prose tight and informative.
- Write articles between 400 – 600 words. If you want to write something longer, consider breaking it into a two or three part series of articles.
- Use research. Make sure you know enough about your subject area to write a confident and informed article. Research the subject area, and browse the community forums to generate article ideas.
- Intersperse your articles with statistics and quotes from relevant sources to make the article more interesting and informative.
- Use press releases. These provide quotes, statistics and a story angle, and can be quoted from directly without it being plagiarism. Don’t just copy them wholesale – use a press release as a starting point for your own take on the subject.
 |
- Plagiarise other stories. This is illegal and a bad habit to get into. Credibility is crucial for a freelance writer, and little hurts this credibility more than plagiarism.
- Base your article entirely on opinion without backing up your story. Make sure your research is in place, otherwise your article will lack substance.
- Submit a first draft. Make sure you proof, edit and redraft your articles to remove mistakes and improve clarity.
